Mummifying Tomatoes

In history, we learned about the Ancient Egyptians, and perhaps the thing the Ancient Egyptians were most famous for was mummification (and the pyramids of course!) After learning about the mummification process, we decided to try it out ourselves. We wrote procedures in our copies for how to make a mummy and then we used tomatoes as our test subjects! We had to first of all slice into the top of the tomato, scoop out its brains and organs (seeds and juice), fill it with natron (salt and bicarbonate of soda), cover it in natron, and then wrap it in bandages (ziplock bags). We will revisit these in a few weeks time to see how the mummification process is going as it can take quite a while!
