A World Full of Colour!

You may have seen us colour mixing and painting our beautiful colour wheels. Here we are showing them off!

Now we’ve made them into something seriously cool! We used our cutting and sticking skills to turn our lovely colour wheels into very colourful eyes (with very glamorous eyelashes!) Check out our process below!

Now to reveal our finished artwork… drumroll please…

The Big Dig!

Posted on

We had a wonderful time in St. Anne’s Park on Friday at The Big Dig! We learned the difference between ecofacts and artefacts and got to have a look at some really cool Viking finds. Did you know an ecofact is a find which was natural e.g. a bone or a skull, and an artefact is a find which was man made e.g. a weapon, cooking utensil or dish? We then got a chance to be archaeologists ourselves and learned how to use a knee pad, bucket, finds tray, shovel and trowel to excavate the earth and look for interesting ecofacts or artefacts.

We also had a chance to go and see the real archaeological site at the old Guinness Mansion at the end of the avenue. We got to see some real artefacts which have been found from the Guinness Mansion and even found out that Queen Victoria visited the mansion at one stage!

Of course no trip to St. Anne’s Park is complete without a picnic and a trip to the playground! We had so much fun but some VERY tired legs coming back to school!

Maths Games

Posted on

We played a new maths game this week to practise our mental addition skills. In pairs we had a deck of cards which we split in half – half each 🙂 Then, we each turned over 2 cards at a time, added our cards together, and the person with the highest total won that round! The competition was very close! You might like this game at home too 🙂

Our Class Survey

Posted on

Over the last few weeks we’ve been taking time to get to know each other. We completed a Class Survey to learn a little more about each other. We shared ideas about our favourite foods and sports as well as the different things we are looking forward to this year. We also surveyed our favourite subjects and the different ways we think we do out very best work. Check out our survey results here!

Colour Mixing!

Posted on

This week we focussed on colour mixing. We learned about primary, secondary and tertiary colours. We created colour wheels by using only blue, red and yellow paint. We worked together in our groups to mix our secondary colours and then our tertiary colours. Our colour wheels look fabulous already, but wait till you see what we’re going to turn them into! Check back soon!

Roald Dahl Day!

Posted on

This week we celebrated Roald Dahl Day! Roald Dahl Day is celebrated on the 13th September each year because it’s his birthday. We sang Happy Birthday to Roald Dahl and discussed our favourite characters and stories written by him. We learned a little bit about his life too. Did you know that he was born in Wales and his parents were from Norway? He also worked as a spy, a fighter pilot, a chocolate historian and a medical inventor at different stages of his life!

Here were are taking part in our Roald Dahl Book Tasting. We had lots of fun getting to try out some of his different books. We had never heard of some of them. After that, we chatted about what we enjoyed about the books.

This week we also spent some time talking about Dahl’s book ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’. We realised that George was being a scientist when he was creating his potion for his Granny. We decided to do our own experiment and made Lava Lamps! We used water, food colouring, vegetable oil and salt to make them. We learned that oil and water are immiscible liquids. This means they can’t be mixed together! Check us out below:

Place Value

Posted on

We’ve been working on place value in maths this week. Understanding place value means that we can understand what each digit in a number is worth. We focussed on Hundreds, Tens and Units. Here were are doing our maths with dice. We had to roll 3 digits and make as many different numbers as possible using these three digits. We were amazed at how many different numbers we could make!

Map Work

Posted on

In Geography this week we were learning about Ireland! We learned about landlocked and coastal counties, the provinces Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connacht, and about the cardinal directions. To help us remember the order of the cardinal directions, we made up some rhymes. These were our 2 most popular: Noisy Elephants Should Whisper, and Never Eat Soggy Weetabix!

Then we had a tricky task of using an atlas! We had to examine a political map of Ireland in the atlas and used it to help us identify some counties on a blank map of Ireland. It was tricky but working together, we achieved great things! Well done Rang a Trí!
